Bitcoin sits on exchanges because the interface layer presents custodianship as the normal path. Users bear counterparty risk on every unit they hold. The protocol was built for the opposite arrangement — but the interface layer was captured before most users arrived.
This pattern appears across sectors with no surface relation to each other. A structure delivers systematically inferior outcomes while remaining stable. The people who benefit from that arrangement are the same people who control the conditions that prevent it from changing.
Open Ring names what is locked in place, finds where the information chain breaks, and identifies the minimum action to change it.
It does not require bad actors. It requires only misaligned incentives — and those are everywhere.
One prerequisite across all versions: direct experience inside the structure you are analysing. The framework organises what you already know. It does not replace knowing.

How it works

Every system has things locked in place and things allowed to vary. That arrangement is not neutral. When what is locked serves the people running the system, and the cost falls on the people using it, the arrangement is inverted.
A thing only tells you the truth when lying about it costs more than it is worth.
The framework checks whether the fixed element is genuinely fixed — meaning that falsifying it would be both expensive and visible. If either condition fails, the element only appears stable. It is actually drifting, and the arrangement can be shifted with less effort than it appears.
The four ways a locked arrangement stays locked
Knowledge. The better option is not known, because those who would lose from change control what gets taught, published, or discussed. Medical education funded by pharmaceutical companies. Financial literacy produced by financial institutions.
Access. Even when people know a better option exists, they cannot reach it — because distribution runs through channels owned by the incumbent. Surfboards through brand-controlled shops. Bitcoin through regulated custodians.
Money. Alternatives cannot be funded — because the institutions that allocate capital benefit from the current arrangement and do not finance what would replace it.
Authority. Even when an alternative exists and people can access it, it lacks legitimacy — because the bodies that certify, approve, or endorse are the same ones that benefit from the status quo.
The diagnostic checks all four
If all four return No — the structure may be approaching capture immunity. If any return Yes — there is maintenance energy holding the arrangement in place. The framework locates the exact node where information stops flowing and names the minimum action at that specific point. Not a disruption. A seed crystal.
Known limits
The framework has three documented failure modes: mixed equilibria (some structures have no single natural arrangement), rotated capture (a seed crystal can release one inversion and create another), and the wrong-layer escape hatch (when a seed crystal fails, it is always possible to say the fixed element was mis-specified — which protects the framework from falsification). All three are documented in the whitepaper.

Bitcoin interface layer

The first real completed cycle. What the diagnostic found, what action was taken, and what happened.
Structure: Bitcoin interface layer — the layer of exchanges, custodians, and on-ramps that sits between the protocol and the user.
Verdict: Inversion confirmed. Institutional intermediation is fixed as the default. User sovereignty over their holdings is the variable bearing all counterparty risk. The protocol layer is approaching capture immune — the 21M cap is enforced by proof-of-work and cannot be falsified cheaply. The interface layer above it is inverted.
Break point: Channel. The signal that self-custody is superior is intact and well-documented. The channel is severely asymmetric — exchange marketing budgets, mainstream media, and regulatory framing carry the intermediation message at orders of magnitude greater reach than self-custody education.
Action taken: Published the Sovereignty, Veil, Hydra whitepaper — three properties of the correct Bitcoin arrangement, in plain language, on Nostr. A seed crystal placed in the channel that the incumbent cannot suppress.
Outcome: Moving toward correct orientation. Purchasing power preserved for users who act on it. The correct arrangement is also the one the protocol was designed for.
